I put myself in the shoes of a comic artist and was able to see fan art a bit differently.
- Imagine if you had worked incredibly hard and dedicated all of your time and efforts into making a comic that you've been dreaming up your whole life, with original and well-developed characters that each have a little bit of yourself in them.
-Then you look on the internet and stumble upon pictures of your characters doing things with your other characters that they would never do.
-Then you see artists without any original ideas of their own getting their fame and recognition from just re-drawing your characters.
-Then you see people at conventions making easy money off of these pictures of your characters without even giving you credit or profit.
Flattery is one thing, but taking someone else's ideas or characters and perverting them for your own sexual, monetary, or attention-seeking gain is something else entirely.
I don't know about you, but if someone did that to my comics/characters I wouldn't be flattered. I'd be pissed D:<
Yes, I used to do all of the above (except sell fan art, but I would've if I had had the chance). And yes, I do favorite fan art on occasion. But now that I'm more aware, I'm making a conscious effort not to support fan art that does these things.
Because not all fan art is bad.
It's the way of the world, but that doesn't make it OK or mean that you have to submit to it.
